Märkberget allocated as a nature reserv in 1983 by the county administrative board. The reserv is 2,8 square kilometres and are now a part of EU:s ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.
The nature reserv of Märkberget also includes Märkforsen. Pine forests, birches, plants and animals exists in the reserv.

The inland ice and water have wear down the mountain chain and formed the shapes we see today.
